The FA of Egypt has placed Egyptian referee Mohamed Farouk on indefinite leave after he allegedly disallowed a goal after viewing video on a spectator’s phone.
In the absence of VAR, Mohamed Farouk used a different approach to review a late goal in an Egyptian Second Division match between Al-Nasr and Suez on Friday.
To deny the visitors an away point at Suez on Friday, Mohamed Farouk was permitted to examine a replay of the goal on a fan’s phone before ruling it out for handball.
According to reports, Vitor Pereira, the president of the Egyptian Referees Committee, has decided to suspend Mohamed Farouk and every member of his matchday staff for “an indeterminate period” as a result of his actions.
Mark Clattenburg, a former experienced Premier League official, was replaced in the position with the ERC earlier in March by Pereira.
The Egyptian FA acknowledged Pereira’s actions and stated, “The committee decided to investigate the issue when Mohamed Farouk, the match’s referee, used a cell phone to review footage of the match’s happenings.
